The African American Museum is excited to present the widely acclaimed exhibition, The Kinsey African American Art and History Collection, celebrating the achievements and contributions of African Americans from 1595 to present times. Check it out at the Museum this Saturday, September 21st!
The Kinsey Collection is unique in that it is where art and history intersect, telling the often untold stories of African Americans’ achievement and contribution through primary sources of historical objects starting from 1595, as well as two- and three-dimensional artworks from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. The Collection has been cited in three national awards, including the President's National Award Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Considered one of the most comprehensive surveys of African American history and culture outside the Smithsonian Institution, the exhibition will feature over 150 of the shared treasures amassed by Shirley and Bernard Kinsey during their five decades of marriage. The collection includes masterful paintings and sculpture, photos, rare books, letters, manuscripts and more.
The African American Museum was founded in 1974 as a part of the Special Collections at Bishop College, a historically black college that closed in 1988. The Museum has operated independently since 1979. The African American Museum is the only one of its kind in the Southwestern Region devoted to the preservation and display of African American artistic, cultural and historical materials. It has one of the largest African American Folk Art collections in the US.
Be sure to see this incredible collection of historic artifacts at the African American Museum on Saturday, September 21st! Admission is $10 for adult non-members. The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection will remain on display through March 1, 2020.
